- Make sure that your child is drinking plenty of water. Toddlers need about 4 cups of water every day. Encourage him to drink water during snacks and when thirsty while playing. You will probably be surprised at how little plain water your toddler drinks throughout the day. In addition to water, toddlers can have about 2-3 cups of milk each day. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, toddlers only need to drink water, milk, and very little juice, if any. This means that your child does not need any soda, lemonade, crystal light, tea, or any other type of drink with empty calories.
- Increase the amount of fiber your child eats throughout the day. Encourage plenty of fruits and vegetables because they are high in fiber. Also, offer whole grains rather than white processed breads.
- Ensure that your child is getting plenty of physical activity throughout the day. While your child may be very active and play often with toys, encourage walking, running, and dancing. These types of physical activity can help relieve constipation.
You may also offer your child some juice to help with constipation. However, keep these two things in mind:
- Juice is not a permanent solution. If you do not increase fluids, fiber, and physical activity you will find yourself in the same situation before long.
- Offer no more than 4-6 ounces of juice each day. You can offer juice twice a day by giving 2 ounces each time.
