High Calorie/ High Protein Ideas for Children

AAP Logo
If your child is underweight or having difficulty gaining weight appropriately, we may recommend you try adding calories and protein to their diet. Here are few tips to keep in mind. You will also find a list of suggestions for meals and snacks below.
  1. The key to increasing calories and protein in children’s diets is to offer food more often. 3 meals and 2-3 snacks should be consistently planned and offered each day. Children should sit down for these meals and snacks with the T.V. off.
  2. “Grazing” or eating many small snacks throughout the day should be stopped. It is very easy to fill up on little snacks and miss nutritious meals.
  3. Only offer milk or juice with meals. Many children will drink so much milk between meals that they fill up! You can help increase their total calories throughout the day by only offering water between meals.
