Everybody needs iron to help carry oxygen from the lungs to the cells in the body. Our bodies cannot make iron, so it is important to get enough iron from the foods that you eat.

Foods high in iron:

  • Lean red meat
  • Iron-fortified cereals
  • Dried beans
  • Whole grains such as oats, brown rice, and whole wheat
  • Eggs
  • Green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, and collard greens
  • Asparagus and broccoli

Foods high in vitamin C:

  • Oranges and orange juice
  • Broccoli, cabbage and spinach
  • Strawberries
  • Grapefruit
  • Cantaloupe
  • Tomatoes and tomato juice
  • Potatoes

Meal Ideas

  • Pair an iron-fortified cerealor whole grain toast with a fruit high in vitamin C for breakfast
  • For dinner, try beef stew with potatoes, tomatoes, and carrots
  • Pair a hamburger patty with steamed broccoli and a fruit high in vitamin C
  • If taking a multi-vitamin with iron, drink with orange juice to promote absorption
*Make sure all foods are the appropriate consistency for your child. Dice or puree foods to prevent choking.
