Using MyPlate to Plan a Balanced Meal

In 2011, the USDA replaced the Food Pyramid with MyPlate. This easy-to-use template can help your family plan healthier meals. Follow the 4 steps below to make your plate look like MyPlate!

Step 1: Fill half your plate with fruits or vegetables.
Step 2: Select a lean meat for the protein portion. A serving size for a teen or adults is about 6 ounces (or the size of a deck of cards) and smaller for younger children. Here is a list of lean proteins: beef, ham, pork chops, fish or seafood, seeds or nuts, beans, chicken, turkey and eggs.
Step 3: Add 1 serving of a whole grain. Remember, portion sizes are important! For a teen or adult the appropriate portion sizes is about ½ of a cup. Here are some great whole grain choices: whole wheat breads, oatmeal, cornmeal, brown rice, wild rice, whole wheat pasta, whole wheat crackers, barley, quinoa, and buckwheat.
Step 4: Add a serving of low-fat dairy. One serving is about 8 ounces of milk. If you don’t like milk, try low-fat cheese, cottage cheese, or fat-free yogurt.
